1% water

site specific installation at BR Roumi (a public fountain today inactive) 2019 // shown at International Media Festival Bienniale Houmt Souk, Djerba // The project raises awareness about sustainability, water and plastic pollution and it has been realized with the contribution of local young people. The site has been collectively cleaned and all materials used into the installation are recycled materials. The structure is made out of recycled PVC plumbing pipes and Neon light, sponsored by Henk Pannekoucke Barka.

“ Until the 70s there was no trace of plastic in the island” but during the following 50 years the massive consumption of plastic destroyed permanently the ecosystem of the territory. The idea that water factories sell water is basically wrong, they sell plastic bottles instead. Even water makes up 60% of human bodies and it is essential to all life forms, in the last 40 years it has been perceived as a commodity, evermore related to an iconic image of a good advertised and consumed as similar products on the neoliberal market. The fountain was reactivated by led lights, recalling an artificial idea of water, and at the same another propriety of it, the ability to quieten the spirits. The site specific sculpture calls to mind the setting of a contemporary revisited zen garden.
